Introducing Ginogiligan
As I mentioned in the "Cast of Characters" post I am also in an acoustic Trio/Quartet with Gino and Christobal "Critter" Henshine. We will refer to it as "Dam Atts How" (I bet Critter will put it all together and figure that one out. )
Originally I was playing upright bass, but due to the horrors of amplifying a Bull Fiddle and until my friend Gaylord and I build an electric upright, I am opting to play my fretless electric. Originally I didn't want to play anything that was electric in this group,(I still don't, but not much I can do there) but I will do whatever it takes until the EUB is ready.
In the beginning when I couldn't go (the new band is keeping me pretty damn busy) to the Dam Atts How gigs, we decided that we would get a fellow by the name of Ernesto Philipe to play bass to fill in for me. After a while Ernesto started coming to the Thursday gigs and playing a song here and there. At some point I was playing guitar on a song that Critter happened not to know. This led Gino and the guys to suggest that on some of the gigs, Ernest should play bass and I would play guitar along with Critter. I like it ok. I prefer playing bass, but playing guitar is fun and different. Having a second chord instrument ads a lot and it does open it up for Critter to play more solos. The only problem I see with it is that when Ernesto can't make a gig, there are songs that we learned that are electric bass oriented and don't really translate well into fretless/upright bass. Originally Gino and I agreed that they wouldn't add songs that couldn't translate, so I guess when I play bass the whole night we just won't do those. So anyway that why I call it a trio/quartet.
We tend to play in Athens at a local wingery just about every other Thursday night. We are currently working on a local wingery in Suwannee. That's a nice one because it is only about 8 miles from home. We could possibly get every other Thursday there as well. The only bad part of that is that I don't know that I am going to be able to play every Thursday night. That's ok though, they can easily play without me.
So tonight we actually played in the Suwannee Wingery. It was a pretty good gig. There were a handful of neck bones that wanted Skynryd but we played some David Allen Coe for them. I sang the Ride and Ernesto and Critter did a kick ass job following me on the changes. In fact we played a handful of songs we don't normally do once we went into request mode. I think that is the most fun part for me as far as playing guitar. I think the rehearsed stuff for the most part is boring for me on guitar and I don't really enjoy that like I like that bass, but playing the stuff we don't know or haven't ever played and leading the guys through the changes is pretty damn cool. Gino and I know a lot of songs from the SUWG days that we can pull out of a hat and it was good that we did some tonight. A few songs we did tonight I had never played and we kind of figured out the changes and just did the chorus. That was fun too. Overall, a good night. I thought we played well and Gino, as usually sang great.
Oh well, now you know about the acoustic group. This one should provide some good stories. NO worries I will still have stories about Warno as well. There are so many of them I have to write about then from time to time. I probably won't ever write about the other band here. I already have a blog for that. Any of you that know me and want to read that blog, let me know and I will send you the address. I can't post it here it will divulge my true identity, not that it is that big of a secret or anything.
